A strong storm hit Staten Island and parts of New York City on Thursday, October 30, 2025, bringing heavy rain and wind that caused problems across the borough.
The main issue: The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was closed to empty tractor trailers, tandems, and multiple trailers due to winds reaching 30–40 mph. Only loaded trucks were allowed, and they had to use the lower level. All other trucks needed to find a different route.
- Speed limits on the bridge were cut before the ban started.
- Checkpoints backed up traffic on the Staten Island Expressway leading up to the bridge.
- Express buses that usually take the bridge were rerouted through New Jersey.
How it played out: Rain started before dawn and picked up fast, leading to flooding around Travis Avenue and Hylan Boulevard. Some cars got stuck, and others had to be towed out of high water.
- More than 1,600 homes and businesses lost power in the morning, with outages in Silver Lake, Bay Terrace, and several other neighborhoods.
- Fallen trees took down power lines and damaged cars—one vehicle in Bay Terrace was crushed, and a person was sent to the hospital after a large tree came down.
- Wires sparked fires in Huguenot when a tree fell, closing roads for emergency crews.
By late afternoon, the rain started letting up, but water still blocked roads and slowed down traffic, according to SILive.com.
Con Edison said the number of homes without power dropped to about 500 by 5 p.m. Utility work continued into the evening as cleanup and repairs were underway.
