A garbage truck was partly swallowed by a sinkhole in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thursday morning. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m., near 16th and Farnam Streets.
The scene: The truck fell into a 10-12 foot deep hole filled with power and gas lines, causing concern for local utilities. It happened after the driver moved a barricade to gain access to the alley, which was already a problem area according to city officials.
- Officials were already aware of sewer issues in the area, which might have contributed to the sinkhole.
- Utility crews are working to assess damage and ensure safety before restoring full power to the area.
Impact: The Omaha Public Power District and the Metropolitan Utilities District quickly responded to shut off utilities in the area to prevent further hazards, reported KETV News.
Thankfully, the truck driver was unharmed, and emergency teams have removed the vehicle and are now assessing the situation underground. The area remains closed to traffic for now, as crews ensure all safety measures are in place.
