West Virginia is getting nearly $25 million in federal grant money to build more truck parking spots at three main locations along I-81, I-64, and I-79.
What's planned: The money will go to the West Virginia Department of Transportation to add parking at welcome centers in Berkeley County (I-81) and Cabell County (I-64). The old weigh stations in Monongalia County (I-79) will be changed into truck parking spaces.
- The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation BUILD program and was made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
- This is meant to help truck drivers find safer places to rest and make it easier to move freight through West Virginia.
What they're saying: Senator Shelley Moore Capito said, "Efforts to upgrade facilities along West Virginia portions of major interstates will enhance the safety of our drivers, support the regional and national movement of goods, and encourage economic investments across our state," according to an official press release.
Construction will cover all three locations, but no official opening date for the new parking spots has been announced yet.
