Five killed after semi hits stopped traffic on I-20

Five people lost their lives in a crash on I-20 near Terrell, Texas, on Saturday, June 28, after a semi driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

What happened: Around 2:40 p.m., traffic was stopped for a previous wreck near the Hiram Road bridge. Authorities say a tractor-trailer driven by 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni did not stop in time and slammed into the back of a Ford F-150 pickup carrying five people.

  • Four people riding in the F-150 died at the scene. The fifth was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
  • The semi kept moving and hit two more 18-wheelers, which set off a chain reaction. One of those trucks jackknifed and hit a Jeep, a Mustang, and a Honda.
  • One person in the Jeep was also killed at the scene, according to CBS News Texas.

Local residents who witnessed the aftermath said emergency crews described it as a “horrific” scene and a “mass casualty” event. The highway was blocked off for several hours as first responders and investigators worked at the site.

Gonzalez-Companioni was taken into custody and faces five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault.
