Firebird Bulk Carriers, based in Dayton, Texas, says it will permanently lay off 74 workers before the end of 2025 due to lost contracts and higher insurance costs.
The big picture: The layoffs will hit truck drivers the hardest, but some shop workers and office staff will also lose their jobs. Most of the cuts are set for the Carrizo Springs location, with others happening in Victoria, Bryan, Dayton, Dilley, George West, and Tarzan.
- Firebird lost about a third of its hauling contracts this year.
- The company says rising insurance rates made things even tougher.
- Some employees might be able to switch over to jobs at Firebird’s parent, Adams Resources & Energy, or at GulfMark Energy, its sister company.
No public statements about next steps have come from the company yet. This information came from a notice to the Texas Workforce Commission, according to Chron.
