This Thanksgiving, a trucking family in Grand Junction, Colorado is working to make sure drivers far from home feel seen and appreciated. The Roy family will spend the holiday handing out hot Thanksgiving meals to truckers parked at the local Love’s truck stop.
Why it matters: Many truckers have to work on Thanksgiving, missing time with family to keep America’s goods moving. Kandi Roy and her kids said it’s a way to thank truckers for what they do, since her husband will be on the road for the first time this year.
- The Roys got permission from the Love’s management to set up outside on Thanksgiving Day.
- They plan to give out meals to at least 200 truckers, including turkey, sides, dessert, and drinks.
- They’re also preparing thank you cards for every driver they meet.
- A GoFundMe fundraiser was set up to help with the cost of food and supplies, according to the fundraiser page.
What they're saying: “Truckers are like the heartbeat of America,” Kandi said. “We don’t have our food, our medical supplies, anything that we need on a daily basis without our truckers.”
The family hopes their small gesture helps make the day better for drivers stuck working away from home. Meals will be passed out throughout Thanksgiving Day at the truck stop, with help from donations and others in their community.
