Emergency shoulder use in effect on I-75 as hurricane nears

Florida highways are seeing heavy traffic as people evacuate due to Hurricane Milton. On Monday, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) activated Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) on key routes.

The details: ESU is now in place on portions of eastbound I-4 and northbound I-75.

  • This measure turns the shoulder into an extra lane to help ease traffic during evacuations.
  • All vehicles except large trucks, buses, and trailers can use this temporary lane.

The hurricane, strengthened to a Category 5, is expected to hit Florida's west coast on Wednesday. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations are in effect across several counties.

Current situation: As of Monday afternoon, significant delays were already reported, especially on I-75.

Officials urge drivers to stay attentive to signs and law enforcement directions when using the shoulder lanes.

This precaution aims to speed up the safe evacuation of residents, reported CDLLife.
