The Wyoming Transportation Commission has approved two emergency repair contracts to start getting the Green River tunnel on I-80 back open. The tunnel was closed after a fatal semi pileup crash in February, shutting down westbound traffic.
What’s new: At a special meeting on May 27, the state gave a $1.03 million contract to Holophane for new tunnel lighting. A second contract went to DeBernardi Construction for about $754,000. This covers fixing damaged concrete, removing busted lights, and cleaning up parts of the tunnel lining.
- Crews spent months inspecting the damage using high-tech tools like LiDAR scanners.
- Wyoming Department of Transportation engineers are still finishing up the plans for long-term repairs, hoping to have them ready for bids by July.
Truckers and travelers have had to reroute for months, putting an extra burden on freight and local hauls. The goal is to reopen the tunnel before this coming winter season, according to Rocket Miner.
