Elderly trucker's lane change leads to canal crash drama

Florida police have apprehended an elderly truck driver after a troubling traffic incident on February 17 that left a car in a canal.

What happened: The crash unfolded at 9 a.m. when 69-year-old Alton Winters, while driving his semi on Kanner Highway, switched lanes and collided with a car holding a woman and her three-year-old child.

  • The impact propelled their vehicle off the highway and into a nearby canal.
  • Thankfully, both occupants managed to escape with minor injuries.

The driver: Winters briefly slowed down but continued on to a produce company, intending to make his delivery.

Law enforcement action: Stuart Police later detained Winters. He now faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and making an improper lane change.
