DOT wants truckers’ advice on fighting rising cargo theft

The Department of Transportation wants feedback from truckers, law enforcement, and the public on how to stop cargo theft. They say thefts are becoming a bigger problem, with crimes happening at truck stops, warehouses, and even through organized crime.

Why it matters: DOT says cargo theft now costs the U.S. economy billions each year. Stolen goods can mean late deliveries, lost money, and trouble for drivers and companies.

  • The thieves aren’t only after easy pickings—some groups are running serious operations.
  • DOT wants advice that can help them make new rules or programs to crack down and keep the freight system safe for everyone on the job.
  • They're asking for comments from people who work in all parts of the trucking and shipping industry, plus police and the general public, according to Regulations.gov.

The public can submit comments through October 20. As of early this week, fewer than 30 comments had been sent in to DOT.
