Distracted trucker sideswipes rig, avoids serious collision

A semi truck sideswiped a disabled big rig on the shoulder of I-40 near El Reno, Oklahoma, on January 6, 2025, caught on a dash cam video shared by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).

Details: The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. when a trucker, momentarily distracted while reaching for a water bottle, veered into the other truck.

  • OHP Trooper Kelby Peoples witnessed the incident firsthand as he was driving behind the semi.
  • Incredibly, no injuries were reported despite the potential for a serious accident.

What they're saying: "This crash could have been deadly," OHP stated, using the video as a reminder for drivers to stay attentive on the road.

The bottom line: Fortunately, this collision ended without injuries, but it underscores the risks that come with even brief distractions on the highway.
