The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is rolling out a new safety plan for the holiday weekend.
What’s new: For the first time, CHP will send messages directly to truckers' Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). The messages aim to warn drivers about road hazards and other issues.
- Messages will be short, around 25 characters.
- Alerts will notify drivers of things like closed roads and high-crash areas.
- Direct messages are displayed on the ELD screen in trucks.
Where and when: The program kicks off during the Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period, starting from 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, and running through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 1.
Why it matters: These alerts aim to enhance safety for all roadway users. Only a few states are using this kind of technology to keep roads safe, according to a CHP document.
Additionally, CHP will have more patrol cars on the highways to look out for speeding and safe driving. This is all part of the effort to prevent road accidents during the busy holiday.
