Chain-reaction crash on I-85 claims eight family members

Eight people from the same family lost their lives in a tragic crash on I-85 in Jackson County, Georgia, on Monday, October 13, 2025.

What happened: A tanker semi-truck ran into the back of a Dodge minivan that was traveling northbound a little after 4 p.m. This set off a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles total.

  • All eight people killed were riding in the Dodge minivan, with ages ranging from 2 to 42. Authorities said they were all family members.
  • The minivan was engulfed in flames after being struck. Emergency teams found seven victims at the scene and later discovered the eighth.

The driver: Police have arrested the semi-truck's driver, Kane Hammock, charging him with eight counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree vehicular feticide, distracted driving, following too closely, and driving without a current plate.
