Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Calexico, California, stopped two major methamphetamine smuggling attempts in mid-March.
The big story: Over 1,300 pounds of meth were seized during two incidents at the Calexico Cargo Facility, located on the U.S.-Mexico border.
- On March 12, a red tractor-trailer driven by a 36-year-old man was found carrying liquid meth in the fuel tank after a secondary inspection with advanced scanning technology.
- The next day, another seizure involved a black tractor-trailer driven by a 30-year-old man. Officers discovered meth concealed in seven duffel bags inside the truck’s cab, according to an official CBP release.
Why it matters: These seizures show the increasing sophistication of smuggling methods and the importance of CBP officers' vigilance and technology in intercepting illegal drugs.
The men, along with the drugs and trucks, were handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further processing. The ongoing efforts to tackle drug smuggling aim to keep these dangerous substances out of communities.
