Brake Safety Week focuses on truck drum and rotor inspections

This year's Brake Safety Week is coming up August 24-30 across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Inspectors will be checking trucks with a special focus on brake drums and rotors.

What to know: CVSA-certified officers will be stopping commercial vehicles to inspect for brake issues and any other problems that could sideline a truck.

  • This year, the main thing they want to look at is the condition of brake drums and rotors—checking for cracks, wear, and other damage that could mess up brake performance.
  • If a truck is found to have a brake-related out-of-service violation, it won't be allowed back on the road until repairs are made.
  • Some teams might use performance-based brake testers to see how well brakes are actually working.

Why it matters: Problems with drums or rotors can hurt a truck’s stopping power or risk debris coming off and causing a bad situation for other drivers on the highway, according to CVSA.

  • During last year’s campaign, over 16,000 trucks were checked, and about 13% were put out of service because of brake violations.

This year's focus is all about making sure drums and rotors are solid—so drivers won't get sidelined by unexpected brake issues during Brake Safety Week.
