U.S. Border Patrol agents made a major drug bust at the Javier Vega Jr. checkpoint near Kingsville, Texas on July 26, 2025.
The stop: A U.S. truck driver hauling a 2012 Freightliner was passing through the checkpoint on U.S. Highway 77 when a Border Patrol K-9 signaled something was off.
- Agents decided to do a deeper inspection after the K-9 unit alerted to the truck.
- They used a handheld X-ray device to check the cab’s ceiling area and discovered 30 bundles hidden inside.
- The stash turned out to be over 72 pounds of cocaine, worth about $2.3 million.
What’s next: The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested at the scene and is now facing charges, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The Border Patrol says the trucker will be handed over for prosecution. The cocaine was seized and removed from the road.
