Autonomous truck company Aurora got the green light from the U.S. Department of Transportation to use cab-mounted warning beacons instead of the usual reflective triangles or flares on their trucks.
How we got here: Aurora had taken legal action after their previous request for cab-mounted beacons was denied. They said these flashing lights work like those used by emergency or construction vehicles and help other drivers see a stopped truck quicker.
- This exemption only applies to Aurora’s autonomous vehicles.
- The lights will show when a truck has pulled over, making it easier for everyone on the road to spot them.
Aurora says using these beacons is a step forward for safety, adding that “innovation improves the safety of our nation’s roadways,” according to Aurora.
With this approval, Aurora plans to drop its lawsuit against the DOT and FMCSA. No changes are coming soon for traditional trucks, just those run by Aurora’s tech.
