Truck driver found guilty of endangerment in Lancaster incident

On September 10, 2024, truck driver Craig Robert Godfrey was found guilty of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The incident: It happened on June 3, 2023, when Godfrey tried to run over Fire Police Lieutenant Timothy Cunningham with his 18-wheeler.

  • Cunningham was directing traffic around a large barn fire on South Red School Road.
  • Godfrey insisted on driving through the closed road and kept lurching his truck toward Cunningham, forcing him to back away repeatedly.
  • At one point, Cunningham had to push himself off the truck to avoid being run over.

Part of the incident was captured on Godfrey’s dashboard camera.

What they’re saying: "The jury’s verdict holds the defendant accountable for his unacceptably dangerous conduct," said First Assistant District Attorney Travis S. Anderson.

Fire police officers and other volunteer first-responders put themselves at great risk to protect others, noted Anderson, according to an official report.

Godfrey’s sentencing is yet to be scheduled.
