Truck driver charged after fatal construction zone crash in Texas

A truck driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after a crash in Fort Worth, Texas. The accident happened early Thursday around 1:30 a.m. on West Loop 820 at White Settlement Road.

What happened: Traffic was stopped in a construction zone compressed to one lane. An 18-wheeler, driven by 24-year-old Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz, failed to stop and collided with a car.

  • The woman driving the car did not survive.
  • A 41-year-old male passenger was seriously injured.
  • A third car was also struck but those occupants were uninjured.

Fort Worth Police Officer Brad Perez stated, "There were signs that he may have been intoxicated." DWI officers performed field sobriety tests and his blood sample confirmed intoxication. Velasquez Cruz was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, according to Fox 4 News.

The investigation is ongoing. All lanes of W. Loop 820 South Freeway were closed following the crash but no other injuries were reported.
