Semi truck submerged in Lake Nipigon raises contamination concerns

A semi truck has been submerged in Lake Nipigon, Ontario, for more than two weeks after a crash on January 12. The truck broke through the ice shortly after skidding off Highway 11.

Quick escape: The driver managed to leave the truck before it plunged into the frigid waters.

  • The semi remains partially visible, with the rear end protruding from the ice.

Community concerns: Nearby residents, especially those from Rocky Bay First Nation, are anxious about potential water contamination. The truck's grease and fluids could threaten the local water supply, critical for several communities.

"Whatever comes from this tractor-trailer [threatens] the fish, the otters, the beavers, everything that drinks from that water," local resident Pegs Lynch said, expressing widespread anxiety among her neighbors.

  • Lynch's concerns stem from the proximity of her home to the community water plant that draws from Lake Nipigon, reported SN News Watch.

Official silence: Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment has not yet shared plans for the truck's removal or any necessary environmental actions. Observers spotted service vehicles at the site but noted no clear activity.

As of now, no injuries have been reported, and the situation remains closely monitored by both residents and officials.
