A significant crash involving a semi truck hauling seven thoroughbred horses led to the tragic death of three horses on March 25 in Bardstown, Kentucky. The accident occurred just before dawn, around 5 a.m.
What happened: Travelling eastbound towards Lexington, the truck crossed the median into westbound lanes and struck the embankment of an overpass. The impact caused the trailer to crush the cab of the truck, according to Nelson County, KY Emergency Management.
The driver, who sustained a severe foot injury, is currently stable and expected to recover.
Losses: The lives of three horses were lost at the scene, with an estimated value of $450,000 for the loss. Meanwhile, firefighters and veterinarians worked to save the other four horses, which suffered life-threatening injuries.
- The injured horses were carefully extracted and transported to a facility for treatment.
The horses were en route from Fairgrounds Racetrack in New Orleans, Louisiana to Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington.
Investigation: Authorities are looking into what caused the semi to veer off its course and result in such a catastrophic event.
The outcome for the surviving horses following emergency treatment has not been revealed.
