Routine stop reveals massive cocaine stash in produce load

A trucker was arrested Monday, January 6, 2025, after a roadside stop in Arizona uncovered a massive cocaine shipment.

The details: The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) stopped the Volvo tractor trailer on I-40 for civil traffic violations. What started as a routine inspection took a quick turn.

  • During the check, officers noticed signs of criminal activity.
  • They found over 550 pounds of cocaine hidden among the truck's produce load.
  • The cocaine's street value is estimated at around $16.6 million.

Driver's fate: The driver, Amarjeet Singh Matharu, 31, was taken into custody. He's facing heavy charges, including drug possession and transportation for sale.

On the move: Authorities believe the drugs were being smuggled from California to Canada.

Thankfully, during the operation, no one was injured, and roads remained open, minimizing disruption to other truckers passing through the area.
