Ohio Turnpike's new fees pressure truckers over missed tolls

Ohio Turnpike authorities are getting serious about unpaid tolls starting February 2025. Commercial truck drivers with outstanding balances need to settle up soon or face some consequences.

What's happening: In April 2024, Ohio introduced a new open road tolling system, where many truckers unknowingly traveled through E-ZPass lanes and missed payments due to a misunderstanding.

  • Truckers were previously given a grace period with no late fees or penalties to adjust to the new system.
  • Starting February 3, 2025, any late payments will incur fees.

Serious measures: If payment is still outstanding by February 10, the Ohio Turnpike will forward unpaid accounts to the Attorney General’s Office for collections and hold vehicle registrations through the BMV.

  • Unpaid notices lingering over 90 days also risk being sent for collections and registration holds.

The accounts of truckers currently disputing toll charges in a hearing will not be sent to collections, according to an Ohio Turnpike press release.

Truckers are key to keeping supply chains moving, and understanding the new toll system is crucial to avoid fines.
