New changes to Colorado's mandatory chain law and lane restrictions are now in effect for truckers.
The background: Colorado State Patrol (CSP) highlighted changes from Senate Bill 24-100. Passed earlier this year, it took effect on August 7, 2024.
What's new: Truck drivers over 16,000 pounds must carry four snow chains or alternate traction devices on specific highways from September 1 to May 31. Routes affected are I-70, Colorado Hwy 9, Route 40, US Route 50, US Route 160, and US Route 550.
- I-70 west of milepost 259 (Morrison)
- Colorado Hwy 9 from milepost 63 to 97 (Frisco to Fairplay)
- Route 40 west of milepost 256 (Empire)
- US Route 50 west of milepost 225 (Salida)
- US Route 160 west of MP 250 (Morrison)
- US Route 550 from milepost 0 to 130 (State line south of Durango to Montrose)
Lane restrictions: Commercial vehicles cannot use the left lane on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, Dowd Junction, Vail Pass, both sides of Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels, Georgetown Hill, and Floyd Hill.
New signs are being installed to warn truckers about these changes, according to a Colorado State Patrol press release.
Truckers should check Colorado's freight and traffic update websites for compliance before starting their trips.
