The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued an emergency waiver for truckers transporting live chickens. The action comes in response to a shortage of eggs due to avian influenza.
Driving relief: The waiver allows extended driving hours for those moving chickens from affected areas.
- The waiver, effective from February 8, 2025, eases hours-of-service rules, permitting up to 16 driving hours in a 24-hour period.
- Drivers are required to take a 6-hour break in a sleeper berth after their driving limit is reached.
Rules to follow: Despite the relaxed rules, certain regulations remain in place.
- Drivers must maintain a valid commercial driver's license and are not allowed to drive under out-of-service orders.
- Paper records of duty status are required to be maintained for six months.
The emergency measures will last until the end of the crisis or until March 10, 2025, whichever comes first, according to an official document.
