Winter storm causes runaway semi tragedy in Missouri

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday, January 4, when a Nebraska man was killed by a runaway semi in Holt County, Missouri.

The incident: At around 12:40 p.m., a 1999 Peterbilt, parked on the east shoulder of I-29, slid down the hill due to winter weather conditions. It struck a 33-year-old pedestrian walking nearby.

  • The truck continued off the road and hit a light pole, causing further damage.
  • The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.

The response: Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers promptly arrived at the scene. They noted that the extreme winter storm contributed markedly to the accident.

Severe weather around Mound City left roads treacherous, impacting the safety of everyone, including those off the highway, according to KCTV5 News.

Emergency workers and MODOT have since been working tirelessly to clear snow-covered roads in the area.
