Trucker injured in fatal head-on collision with deputy's vehicle

A Hillsborough County deputy was killed and a trucker injured after a collision on U.S. Highway 301 in Thonotosassa, Florida. The crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. on September 19.

The details: Deputy Darell Brown, 40, was driving home from his shift at the Orient Road Jail when his Ford F-150 drifted into oncoming traffic.

  • The trucker tried to stop but couldn't avoid a head-on collision.
  • The impact pushed Brown's truck approximately 100 yards, while the semi jackknifed off the road.
  • Brown was killed instantly, whereas the trucker sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

What they're saying: "Our hearts break for the family, friends, and loved ones of Deputy Brown as they navigate this incomprehensible loss," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "This tragedy comes at an incredibly difficult time for our Sheriff's Office," he added.

Brown was a nearly 10-year veteran and left behind a family, including five children. The sheriff described him as a friend and mentor.

All lanes of U.S. 301 were closed for several hours following the crash but have since reopened. The cause of Brown's vehicle drifting is still under investigation, according to WTSP News.
