Trucker braves floodwaters, saving couple amid hurricane chaos

Truck driver George Maxwell is recovering in a hospital after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria while rescuing a couple trapped by floodwaters during Hurricane Milton.

What happened: Maxwell was parked near Tampa, Florida on Interstate 4 when he noticed the water rising around a barn where Tonia Muse and Dan Heton were taking shelter.

  • Without hesitation, Maxwell braved chest-high water to lead the couple to safety in his semi truck.
  • The trio waited out the flood, sheltered in Maxwell's rig on higher ground.

The reward: For his bravery, Maxwell was honored with the National Truckload Carriers Association's "Highway Angel Award."

Quote: "I didn’t do nothing more than nobody else would have done, I hope," Maxwell said after the rescue. He also lost his personal vehicle to the floodwaters.

Unfortunately, Maxwell is undergoing treatment for a painful condition caused by his heroic actions. Despite the adversity, Maxwell insists he'd make the same choice again.

Maxwell's courageous act underscores the incredible role truckers play when emergencies strike. He and the couple now share a bond, with Heton calling Maxwell a "friend for life."

Thankfully, the couple emerged unhurt from the terrifying ordeal, reported FOX 13 News.
