Semi-truck driver arrested for intoxication manslaughter in fatal crash

A semi-truck driver was arrested in Fort Worth for intoxication manslaughter after a tragic crash on West Loop 820. The incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in a construction zone.

The details: The driver, 24-year-old Guadalupe Velasquez Cruz, failed to stop and collided with a car in front of him, which was also hit by another vehicle due to the chain reaction.

  • The woman driving the car that was initially struck was killed.
  • Her 41-year-old male passenger was seriously injured.
  • A third vehicle was involved, but its occupants were unhurt.

What happened: Police performed field sobriety tests and took a blood sample from Cruz. "It came back that he was indeed intoxicated," said Officer Brad Perez. Consequently, Cruz was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Investigators are still looking into why Cruz was driving in such a state, reported Fox 4 News.

The construction zone contributed to the congestion, making the effects of the crash even worse. All lanes of W. Loop 820 South Freeway were closed for the investigation. No further injuries were reported from the third vehicle involved.
