Ohio trucker's fate uncertain with new court hearing

Calvin Neyland, a truck driver convicted of murdering two of his bosses in 2007, is currently on death row. He does not want to pursue a hearing that could change his sentence.

What's happening: Neyland was found guilty of killing Douglas Smith and Thomas Lazar, who held management positions at Liberty Trucking in Ohio. He has been on death row since 2008, and recent Ohio law changes allow convicts a chance to request a competency hearing to potentially alter their sentence.

  • Despite his reluctance, Neyland's attorney has requested a hearing aimed at changing his death sentence to life in prison.
  • Before any decision, a separate hearing must determine if Neyland is competent to decline the opportunity for a hearing to alter his sentence.

Background: At the time of the murders, Neyland was reportedly going to be fired from his job due to customer complaints, reported Sentinel-Tribune.

His initial trial showed overwhelming evidence of guilt, and despite some legal errors, the death sentence was upheld.

The latest: A hearing to evaluate Neyland's mental competency is scheduled for Monday, October 21st.
