Mackinac Bridge introduces credit card fee for toll payments

The Mackinac Bridge Authority will start adding a 2.3% convenience fee for credit card toll payments beginning January 1, 2025. This move aims to recoup some of the rising costs from credit card fees.

Background: Credit card processing fees have become a significant expense for the Mackinac Bridge, totaling $341,761 in 2024. The newly implemented convenience fee won't cover all costs but will help manage them.

  • The average credit card fee for tolls is currently 3.07%, with about 12-13% of all tolls paid this way.
  • The Authority also decided to stop accepting American Express due to its high transaction costs.

Changes for drivers: To simplify MacPass accounts, the initial deposit minimum will be halved from $80 to $40. For those refilling accounts, the deposit minimum is dropping from $50 to $20, as reported by the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

These updates reflect the ongoing need to maintain the Mackinac Bridge while managing rising operational expenses.
