Cow injures deputy after escaping truck fire on I-15

In a peculiar incident on Sunday afternoon, a cow injured a sheriff's deputy on Interstate 15 near Shelley, Idaho. The cow had escaped a cattle hauler fire earlier.

What happened: A semi truck caught fire near the Shelley exit on I-15, prompting the driver to release the cattle as a precaution. When responders arrived, one cow bolted into the northbound lanes.

  • The sheriff's deputy attempted to capture the runaway cow but was knocked down and attacked.
  • The deputy fired at the cow in self-defense, injuring it fatally.

The deputy was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released the same day. The cow had been injured during the truck fire, which possibly explained its aggressive behavior, according to the Idaho State Journal.

Impact: Southbound I-15 was shut down for about four hours as authorities collected the remaining cattle and cleared the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the fire and subsequent events remains ongoing.
