Chain reaction crash with semi leaves father dead in Houston

A tragic crash occurred on January 31 at a Houston intersection, killing a father and injuring his young son. The collision involved multiple vehicles and reportedly took place when an SUV set off a chain reaction at a stoplight.

The incident: Around 7 p.m., on the South Sam Houston Parkway East service road, the crash happened involving a semi truck and several passenger cars.

  • Francisco Medillin, driving a Chevrolet Cavalier, died at the scene.
  • A 9-year-old boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized.
  • A woman in a black SUV was critically injured and needed emergency rescue.

Investigation ongoing: The Houston Police Department (HPD) released a video showing an 18-wheeler truck they initially suspected to be a key player in the crash.

However: Footage obtained by KTRK suggests a black SUV might have instigated the crash by causing the pile-up reported Fox San Antonio. The semi got caught in the chaos.

What they're saying: Witness Sabrina Campuzano said, "My heart was pounding out of my chest," capturing the shock and confusion felt by those nearby.

Calls for information continue as the investigation seeks further clues to untangle the events leading to the crash. HPD is urging anyone with details to contact their Hit and Run Unit.
